D After 60k miles, my Culture shocks zq8 shocks finally bit the dust. I heard of people having these up k miles. But I noticed ever since mile 30k, that the suspension was becoming soft.
The shocks felt like the compression was set too soft as the truck would hit the bumpstops easier going down the road and the rebound was set too high, as the shocks would not soften the truck as it came down from a suspension travel, but would just jerk down.
It made for a very unpleasant ride. I tried getting new replacements, but the only place to get original Bilsteins were from the dealership. That was way too much to pay just for shocks. My problems started at 30k so why would I want another set of shocks that will go out shortly.
I tried looking into threads here on forums and everyone had their own opinions on which shock each person liked. The only one most people agreed on were that Bilsteins were the best on the market.

Defibrillation is a treatment for life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias, specifically ventricular fibrillation (VF) and non-perfusing ventricular tachycardia (VT). A defibrillator delivers a dose of electric current (often called a countershock) to the regardbouddhiste.comgh not fully understood, this would depolarize a large amount of the heart muscle, ending the dysrhythmia.
But the only place I found replacement Bilsteins other than the dealership was from Autozone. According to their website, they use the same part number for both zq8 and non-zq8 trucks.
No one could give me a straight answer if these would work in a zq8 truck since these are lowered 2" from factory. But my main concern was if these would perform as good as or better than the factory units.
So I got a set and became the guinea pig. A huge difference compared to OEM prices. Originals are on left and the Autozones are on the right. Everything else looked exactly the same.
Now while these also had the same shock lengths, you can see that they are reversed to each other. I double checked the part numbers and everything was correct. I was also concerned with mounting these new ones with the shock bodies on top would alter the shocks performance since gravity might have an effect on where the fluid settles.
I also wanted to see if compressing these by hand offered any clues to differences in stiffness. For the fronts, the compression seemed just a smidge softer than the originals, but they rebounded back very quickly.
For the rears, these things were very difficult to compress. These shocks also rebound linearly, which means the rebound at a constant rate. The rears are very stiff and were near impossible to keep compressed so that I could install them.
Trying to hold them compressed so I could install them wore me out. But I thought I would give these a try and see how well they worked.
I drove on them to and from work for the next 4 days just like normal and instantly the ride smoothed dramatically. Imperfections in the road that normally jerked and bucked the truck around were easily gobbled up with these shocks.
After that I got a chance to pick up the pace and flog my truck in a higher speed testing situation.

I went out to a big open parking lot at the Dell Diamond here in Round Rock and used the ligh poles as points to make turns at. Let me say that these really kept the truck planted to the ground.
I got the speeds up pretty good, around 40 and took some nice u-turns and I really had to hold on without getting thrown to the other side of the truck. Last edited by scott; at Shake Shack is coming to the Bay Area next month with new menu.
